Finally, a fish post....

Here it is! I know what my readers want! You've all been thinking, "Carolyn, when will we see pictures of your new fish ? How is Bubbles 2 doing? We're up all night, tossing and turning, because we haven't seen Carolyn's newest pet!!"

So this is it .... Bubbles 2!

Okay, that's a blurry one, let's try again.... Bubbles 2!!

Hmmm... one more time... Bubbles 2!!!

Okay, this fish moves way too much for my lousy camera. In fact this little guy moves constantly. Zipping around his little bowl like he's in a mad fish marathon. Can a fish be cute? I never thought so before, but this one is!

Anyway, I thought I'd go online to find a GOOD picture of a fish that looks like him.

This isn't it.

This is a fish bra. Not mine, but it puts a whole new perspective on leaking for me ( a woman who nursed three kids).

Anyway, high maintenance underwear seems like a whole separate post, and I'm tired of attempting to share photos of Bubbles 2 (sorry more sleepless nights for you!). Cheers!

Build-A-Bear Birthday Bash

This week Naomi hit the ripe old age of seven, so a celebration was in order. What better way to celebrate than to gather old friends to make new friends!

Just walk in the store.

Pick your new friend out of the bin, and give it a big hug.

This is the part where they parade about with the animal skins on their heads. As you can see in the background I'm a bit jealous that I don't have the skin of my new friend on my head.

This is the heart bin.

Now everyone selects a heart.

Give it some lovin' and then put it in the birthday girl's new bear! Naomi's bear gets loads of hearts. All the bears get a heart, you can even get a beating one! (How creepy is that!)

Time to stuff her!

... And sew her!

Naomi and her new friend "Bon Bon"

Phoebe's new friend is "Bo Bo" and Chloe made "Jonas"!

Here they are at the end with all their new bear friends.

Happy Birthday Naomi!!

Dog Days of Summer

It's finally really heating up here in San Diego. I can't complain, (much) it's better than last year. To distract the kids and help Mike make a dent in the mountain of work he has, I took the kids for some outings this week. We headed over to the Museum of Man on Tuesday. I thought it might be nice and air conditioned.... No such luck.

Even packed to the gills and boiling hot, it turned out to be a great place!

The Mayan exhibit is always fascinating...

Upstairs we studied evolution. This display ventures into the future!

This is a Dire wolf, the sign said there are 3,600 Dire Wolves in the LaBrea Tar Pits. I think that means there were an almost alarming number of huge prehistoric wolves around here or the tar pits sucked up a massive wolf magnet at some point.

Phoebe found Big Foot.

By the way, before you decide how awful this photo is please consider the following....

"I think Bigfoot is blurry, it's not the photographer's fault" Mitch Hedberg

So there you go... Best picture of Bigfoot EVER!

Naomi found a brain.

At least the gift shop had a/c... Yes we lingered there!

On Saturday, the nearby historic park called "Old Town" had a "Twain Festival".
Apparently it's been 100 years since Mark Twain died so we headed on down to ummm... celebrate his death.

This was called "fishing for words"...

Here's Chloe in a 18th century Spelling Bee.

She had to spell words like "Pshaw" and "Pudd'n head". It was... interesting.

Naomi loved the puppet show.

Over all it was a nice festival, though most of the prizes were old books. I liked them, but my kids didn't. Oh well.

Competition Day

Yesterday at 8:00am our sandcastle team gathered at Imperial Beach for the 30th annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition.
We were supposed to get there by 7:30am, but getting our act together and 7 of us ready was surprisingly difficult at 5:30am (when we woke up).

This is our team...

Mike Dubisch - team leader

Chloe Dubisch

Chloe's friend "K"

Robert Dubisch

Kristen Clark Mangus

John Moncure

Kelly Clark Moncure

Mandy Fragale

Santo Fragale

and me... in a hat!

It was intimidating when we arrived. We were placed between two previous winners, who had big sponsors and tents and some teams flew in from as far away as Australia and New York.

Next to us they had a camera on a big boom that swung overhead.

But when the horn blew we just got started and tried not to think about the man with the giant 3D camera filming us.

After an hour you can see it's no longer a flat bit of sand.

Of course our plot was positioned right in front of the judges tents (also a bit intimidating).

Here we have started wetting the area where we will sculpt the head.

As the day progressed the crowd surged in size!

Kristen doing some detail work...

Me again...

The kids kept busy with their own project.

Right after Mike finished the head.

Mike building up the wall.

Rob sculpting.

Working in front of such a large crowd was distracting to say the least.

There were 305,000 people there, not to mention N.P.R. was roaming around interviewing and the Discovery Channel was filming.

By the end our "Menace from the Deep" came together pretty well!

For a bunch of first time sand sculptors I think we're all pretty proud of this one!

One thing to consider though.... A crowd this big makes for A LOT of traffic! It took us three hours to get home, and boy was I glad when we finally made it. Today I am VERY sore.
"People are willing to take these extraordinary chances to become writers, musicians, or painters, and because of them, we have a culture. If this ever stops, our culture will die, because most of our culture, in fact, has been created by people that got paid nothing for it--people like Edgar Allan Poe, Vincent Van Gogh or Mozart."-Kurt Vonnegut
